Most of the following attractions are within 10 minutes of Paul's RV

- Port of Brownsville & shrimp fleet (tours and fresh shrimp available)
- World famous Gladys Porter Zoo - a tropical garden home for rare and endangered animals,
birds, and reptiles
- Sabal Palm Grove - the only native palm forest on the Rio Grande River (now managed by
the Audobon Society and offering excellent birding and hiking in a native habitat)
- Laguna Atascosa - 45,000 acre national wildlife sanctuary situated on the Bay; winter
home for many northern bird species, the jagarundi, alligators, and havelina; driving and
foot trails open all year (30 minutes)
- Palo Alto Battlesite National Park - initial battle of the Mexican American War on May
8, 1846; canon and flags mark the site admist fields of cactus and mesquite
- Confederate Air Force World War II Flying Museum and Gift Shop
- Texas Air Museum - home of the deck of the Iwo Jima carrier used to display World War II
aircraft (Rio Hondo, 30 minutes)
- University of Texas Coastal Studies Marine lab - display of shells, turtles, and other
marine life; videos available to watch (20 minutes)
- Mexico - shopping or lunch in Matamoros or Progresso (30 minutes; motor coach tours
available, 2 days to weeks in length
- Sweet fresh citrus fruit - home of the Rio Red grapefruit (buy it right from the
orchard!)
- Brownsville Historic Museum - housed in the ornate restored Southern Pacific Railway
Station, the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture makes it one of Brownsville's most
outstanding landmarks
- Brownsville Historic City Cemetary with above ground family crypts; one block from
Historic Museum
- Fort Brown original site - the oldest permanent fort in Texas, established in 1846;
restored and used by the University of Texas Brownsville
- Stillman Home Museum - restored 1850 home of Brownsville's original founder, Charles
Stillman; built of handmade brick and furnished with period pieces
- Immaculate Conception Cathedral - built by French missionaries of the Order of the
Oblates of Mary Immaculate and dedicated in 1859; still in use daily by the same order
- Brownsville City Hall and Market Place - built about 1850; restored and used today as
City Commission chambers as well as the hub of the Brownsville city transit system
- Camille Lightner Theatre - live performance theatre making use of local talent from all
ages and walks of life; see the Brownsville web site (link follows) for dates and plays
and musicals
- Reforma Theatre, Matamoros, Mexico - refurbished 18th century theatre now booking world
renown performers as well as weekly Mexican folkloric dancers during the winter months
- Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge - 2,000 acres of sub-tropical forest along the Rio Grande
River; nature center and trails open daily; interpretive tram tours November thru March
- Gulf of Mexico beaches - explore the shores of undeveloped Boca Chica Beach that touches
the mouth of the Rio Grande River, or enjoy the fast pace of the water sports or nightlife
on South Padre Island (20 minutes)
